What is Netiquette?

Netiquette is the set of manners or code of conduct that governs

online behavior. As a digital citizen it is important to know some of the basic guidelines or netiquette to be able to communicate politely and effectively in online spaces. Netiquette should be considered anytime you are posting, sharing, or communicating with others online. By observing and using the common rules of netiquette students can be sure they are communicating politely and effectively in online communities.

Some general netiquette guidelines would be to always remember to communicate the same online as you would communicate face to face. Be clear, kind, and courteous in online communication and discussions. It is beneficial for students to understand netiquette rules in order for them to be able to communicate and learn in online spaces effectively. It would be beneficial to make posters or anchor charts for students to view in the classroom, so they can be reminded of proper netiquette rules and guidelines. Here a Few Key Netiquette Guidelines to Remember

  • Stay on topic. Don't post irrelevant links, comments, thoughts or pictures.
  • Don't type in ALL CAPS! If you do it will look like you are screaming.
  • Don't write anything that sounds angry or sarcastic even as a joke, because without hearing your tone of voice, your peers might not realize you're joking.
  • Always remember to say"please" and "thank you" when soliciting help from your classmates.

Cyberbullying is bullying that occurs in online spaces. Cyberbullying can occur anywhere online but is most common on social media platforms, in email, text, and gaming communities. Cyberbullying can occur anywhere where individuals can post, share or communicate content online. Cyberbullying can include sending, posting or sharing negative, false or derogatory content about another person. Cyberbullying can also involve sharing private or personal content that causes embarrassment or humiliation. Specific concerns about cyberbullying is that it can be persistent, permanent, and hard for parents and teachers to notice. Some important guidelines to remember to teach students about cyberbullying are the following;

  • Give support to someone you suspect is being cyberbullied
  • Stand up to cyberbullies
  • Report any instances of cyberbullying to parents or teachers
